# Motorcycle Insurance Coverage: Not Just For Motorcycles

Fall presents an ideal opportunity, thanks to the mild weather, to enjoy being outside riding a motorcycle, ATV or moped. However, it is vital that you make sure your ride is protected by motorcycle insurance in Missouri, amongst other states, before you venture out for a day of fun. To neglect to do so could be disastrous. Read on to learn more about motorcycle insurance and why it's a necessity:  

## What is Motorcycle Insurance?

Although called motorcycle insurance, motorcycle insurance is applicable for more than just motorcycle coverage. In fact, many alternative recreational vehicles fall under this category as well. A motorcycle policy is basically a collection of multiple types of coverages or categories which each includes varying levels of protection. Similar to [car insurance](https://blog.myarnoldteam.com/straight-talk/common-auto-claims), good motorcycle insurance will include coverage that protects you from both the cost of causing an accident and the cost of damage to your own ride if you are the victim of someone else's mistake. 

## What Kinds of Vehicles Are Covered Under a Motorcycle Insurance Policy?

As mentioned above, motorcycle insurance covers more than just motorcycles. It can cover a variety of vehicles. Check with your state of residence to determine their specific state regulations. Their requirements will help you determine if a certain amount of coverage on various types of vehicles is mandatory or not. You want to make sure that you comply with local and state laws. However, even if your state doesn’t require specific coverage, insurance protection is never a bad idea. For example, even though Missouri doesn’t have state laws that make insurance coverage mandatory for ATVs, it’s still a wise idea to purchase insurance as it protects what can be a pricey investment. The following are the types of vehicles that typically fall into motorcycle insurance policies:

- Motorcycles along with any sidecars.
- Dirt bikes.
- Mopeds.
- ATVs.

## What Does Motorcycle Insurance Cover?

Similar to regular vehicle insurance, motorcycle policies offer a range of protection that includes the following categories. You can opt for basic liability coverage or step up and choose a more comprehensive level of protection. The following are a few examples of the various types of coverage you could purchase:

- **Liability:** This coverage protects you in the event that you cause property or physical damage to another person in an accident in which you are at fault.
- **Collision Coverage:** This helps you repair your vehicle if it's hit by another vehicle during an accident. It can also include coverage if you hit another object, meaning the fault can be either yours or someone else's. 
- **Comprehensive Coverage:** This helps pay for your motorcycle or other recreational vehicles if it is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision or vehicle accident. This could include protection from damage sustained by animals, trees, natural disasters, etc.  
- **Medical Payments Coverage:** This protects you up to the limit of your policy, providing necessary medical care to you and/or a passenger. 
- **Personal Injury Protection:** This is yet another level of protection that provides an additional measure of coverage for you and any passengers riding along with you in the event you become injured.

## Motorcycle Insurance: Don’t Ride Without It

Being on the back of a motorcycle with nothing but the wind and open-air surrounding you is exhilarating and freeing, not to mention a lot of fun. However, given the risk that comes along with riding motorcycles and other recreational vehicles mentioned, having this type of fun should not be without the presence of adequate insurance coverage. In fact, motorcycle insurance is something you most certainly and undoubtedly should purchase. The only question that exists is how much coverage is right in your individual situation.
